E-2 Visa in Canada: Toronto Interviews, Wait Times, and Why Not Vancouver

If you are a Canadian planning an E-2 visa, two questions come up almost immediately: how long will it take to get an interview, and can I do that interview at my local consulate? Canada handles a high volume of E-2 applications, so the answers matter to a lot of people. Let me lay out how the timing works and why your interview location is not always your choice.

How Fast Can You Get an E-2 Interview in Toronto?

The honest answer is that the government is in charge of the calendar, and the calendar moves. As of early 2026, here is the rhythm we have been seeing for new applications filed with the U.S. Consulate in Toronto.

After you submit your application, it takes about four weeks to hear back from the consulate. During that stretch, everyone simply waits while the consulate reviews. Then you get an email that says the review is done and invites you to log in and pick an interview date. The date you can choose is usually another three to four weeks out from that email.

So from submission to interview, you are often looking at roughly seven to eight weeks in total, split between the review wait and the scheduling gap. That said, this can shift at any time. It is the government’s timeline, not ours, and we have watched it stretch and contract more than once.

Why You Have to Wait for the Consulate

People sometimes ask why they cannot just book an interview the moment they file. The E-2 is document heavy. The consulate reviews a large package of materials before it will schedule you, because the officer wants the file in order first. That review step is what creates the front-end wait, and it is also why the E-2 does not appear on the standard online interview-wait tools the way simpler visa types do.

Can You Interview in Vancouver or Calgary Instead?

Here is a point that catches many Canadian applicants off guard. If you live in Vancouver or Calgary, you might assume you can interview at the consulate nearest you. For a new E-2 visa, you cannot.

New E-2 visa interviews for Canadians must take place at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto. That is where new treaty investor cases are processed. So even if you are on the other side of the country, your first E-2 interview points to Toronto.

There are specific situations where Vancouver or Calgary come into play. If your business has already been registered as an E-2 business in Toronto and you are bringing on an E-2 employee, that employee may be able to apply at one of those consulates. And if you already hold the E-2 visa but some of your family members do not yet have theirs, those family members may be able to go to Calgary or Vancouver to apply. The pattern is consistent: Toronto establishes the E-2 business, and the other consulates handle certain follow-on cases once that foundation exists.

Planning Around the Canadian Timeline

For most Canadian applicants, the practical takeaway is to plan for Toronto and build in a couple of months between filing and the interview. Get your document package as clean as possible up front, because the quality of that package is what keeps you out of an avoidable second wait. Then keep some flexibility in your calendar, since the dates can move on short notice.

Canada remains one of the busiest and most active places for E-2 approvals, and that volume works in your favor: the process is well worn. Have questions about your timing or where you will interview? Give us a call anytime. We would love to speak with you about your E-2 visa.
